ICC, International Certificate of Competence.

If you are going to cruise the inland waterways of Europe the International Certificate of Competence, ICC, is mandatory in some continental countries.

Our course qualifies you to the latest rules regarding the size of boat and is valid for boats up to 24 metres in length.

There are two parts to be completed at our training centre to gain an inland, power craft, ICC.

1. Complete the one day ICC course at our training centre. This is valid for boats up to 24 metres in length.

2. Complete the CEVNI test. See the CEVNI page.

You will then have the qualifications required for the RYA to issue an inland, power craft, International Certificate of Competence ICC to UK nationals or UK residents, nationals of North America or any country that is not a member of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

Cost: Our ICC course and CEVNI test together, £155. The CEVNI test by itself, £25

Alternatively to completing our ICC course you can to take a practical test on your boat. The syllabus for the International Certificate of Competence ICC test is below but is dependant on where you take the test.

Depart from a pontoon.

Propeller Walk
At the same time as moving a boat forwards or backwards some propeller installations move the stern of a boat sideways.
A right-hand prop rotates clockwise when viewed from the rear and may try to move the stern to the right when in forward gear.
ICC Prop
This sideways motion is easily corrected by the effective rudder which has lots of water being passed over it by the propeller.
When in reverse gear a right-hand prop may move the stern to the left.
ICC Prop
This sideways motion is difficult to correct because of poor rudder authority when in reverse, which is caused by the lack of water passing over the rudder.

For a left-hand prop everything is the opposite way round.
The theory of Prop Walk is not part of the
International Certificate of Competence, ICC;
