Single crew manoeuvring, mooring, operation of locks including staircases, lock keeper operated river locks and emergencies.

Manoeuvring the bow with the pole and steering in reverse.

Bow thruster operation (if that’s advanced) to move the boat sideways and reverse.

Manoeuvring with ropes controlling both the bow and stern during mooring arrival and departure, winding and turning, lock techniques, rope spring techniques.

Man overboard drills and exercises on the river.

Anchoring on rivers, in an emergency and by choice

Prop walk

At the same time as moving a boat forwards or backwards some propeller installations move the stern of a boat sideways.
A right-hand prop rotates clockwise when viewed from the rear and may try to move the stern to the right when in forward gear.

ICC Prop
This sideways motion is easily corrected by the effective rudder which has lots of water being passed over it by the propeller.

When in reverse gear a right-hand prop may move the stern to the left.
ICC Prop

This sideways motion is difficult to correct because of poor rudder authority when in reverse, which is caused by the lack of water passing over the rudder.

For a left-hand prop everything is the opposite way round.
